Play My Song!

There’s something in the voice. At the end of the day, we all tune in to the radio to catch up on the latest music but think about it – why do you switch stations? Yup, the pressure is on the RJ or radio jockey. Sometimes sultry, sometimes humorous – it’s actually these voices that make or break our loyalty to a particular station. Think you have the gift? Here’s what goes into it:

  1. Spontaneity – you have to be able to answer whatever weird questions/ requests are thrown your way.
  2. You are LIVE & on-air. Shows are not pre-recorded so your reactions cannot be rehearsed.
  3. You have to enjoy talking to people from all walks of life
  4. Up to date on current affairs – whether it’s music, local news or world events
  5. It’s not a 9-5 job. RJ’s are called in to host particular shows so there is the possibility of doing something else on the side
  6. There are specialty courses which improve voice modulation (pitch, depth etc.) so sign up for one in preparation for the job
  7. Comfort with the equipment – whether it’s sound-mixers, computers etc.
  8. Most importantly – you need to be able to create a relationship with your listeners – whatever it may be e.g. an advisor or a friend

MUST-HAVE (or forget about it!)

A love of your own voice. ‘Coz that’s what you hear. All the time.

Some people are born with it and some people get born in to it. Which one are you?
